Banyan: every app on Canopy can now upgrade in place

Canopy shipped Banyan (v2.0), its first named protocol upgrade, using a feature called Canopy Auto Update. The network moved to new rules with zero downtime, block production never breaking cadence, and almost nobody noticed. That was the point, and the more useful part is what it means for everyone building on Canopy.

Why apps do not iterate

Normal software ships new versions constantly. Onchain apps mostly do not, because once code is live onchain it is hard to change. A smart contract is effectively set in stone: to ship a real change you deploy a new version and move users and liquidity across, which is slow and risky. So onchain apps change as little as possible, as rarely as possible. That is why you can count a major protocol's versions on one hand.

Canopy Auto Update makes upgrading routine instead of rare. The network can roll out an upgrade to itself and switch it on at a scheduled point, without going offline and without a manual scramble to keep everyone in sync. Banyan is the first upgrade shipped this way. It will not be the last.

You inherit this

Here is the real story. Because every app on Canopy runs on the same infrastructure, every builder gets this same ability. When you need to roll out a change or a fix, your application can adopt it on schedule, without redeploying or asking users to migrate. Evolving a live onchain application is normally a privilege of large teams with dedicated infrastructure. On Canopy it is a default.

Banyan also brings fuller compatibility with standard Ethereum tooling, so if you are building against Canopy with tools you already know, there is less translation between what those tools expect and what the network does.

Why it matters now

We ran Banyan ahead of mainnet deliberately. You want to find out whether your upgrade process works while the stakes are still low, not after real value is riding on the network. Mainnet is live now, and being able to keep improving without disruption is the difference between an onchain app that compounds and one that freezes because changing anything has become too expensive. You should not have to notice.
