From an Idea to an App You Own, in Days

A builder with an idea can have a working frontend by the end of the afternoon. Standing up the network underneath it has been the part measured in quarters.

Canopy CEO Adam Liposky and CTO Andrew Nguyen sat down to walk through what that looks like now. The path below is the one Andrew describes, and the full conversation is at the bottom of this post.

Start in the Terminal, and pick a language you already know

You begin in Canopy Terminal. You sign in with an Ethereum wallet, choose the language you want to develop in, and Terminal sets up your project from there.

The list is the one most builders are already in: Canopy ships official Template implementations for Go, TypeScript, Python, Kotlin and C#. A Template is an opinionated scaffold that hands you the code structure and the runtime hooks for defining an application, so nobody starts from an empty folder and nobody learns a new language to get going.

Build the part that is actually yours

Behind each Template is a plugin, a separate process that runs alongside the Canopy node and talks to its state machine. The node carries networking, consensus and state. You carry the application.

That division is the whole point. You can define your own transaction types and your own endpoints, and everything underneath them already works. Andrew's phrasing for it is that you get your own client "by piggybacking off of all the work that we've done here in the core team."

Launch it, and graduate into a network you own

When it is ready, it launches through Terminal, application and token together, and people can back it while it is finding its footing. Reach the threshold and the launch graduates: what was a project becomes an operating network with a liquid token, a holder base, and wallet and explorer support. From that point you and your team run it.

Which is where the ownership part stops being a slogan. As Adam puts it, "not only do you own your application, you own your validator set, you own your token." There is no landlord to outgrow and no migration waiting a year out, which is exactly the problem he and Andrew went looking for a solution to in 2024 and ended up building instead.
